During Black History Month we are excited to spotlight our talented Crewmembers who continue to make remarkable contributions to the OTG team! This month, we asked Crewmembers across our airports to reflect on what Black History Month means to them, share their inspirations, and expand on the significance of being a part of a workplace that fosters an environment of inclusivity. We’re thrilled to share their responses here.

For me, Black History Month is a time to honor and acknowledge the sacrifices made by my ancestors who fought for freedom, equality, and justice. It is a reminder of the ongoing struggle against racism and the continuous pursuit of social, economic, and political advancements for African Americans. Black History Month is also an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about the achievements and contributions of black individuals in various fields, including art, science, literature, sports, politics, and social activism.

Airport Director, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport
Black History Month holds deep significance for me, as it serves as a dedicated time to reflect, celebrate and honor Black individuals' achievements, contributions, and struggles throughout history. For African Americans, Black History Month is a time to celebrate. It is inspired by the collective recognition around the need to rectify historical omissions, celebrate Black achievements, and promote a more inclusive and accurate understanding of the nation's history. It continues to be a vital annual observance that contributes to the ongoing dialogue on race, equality, and justice. Which is why it’s so important that OTG celebrates, as it’s essential for fostering inclusivity, promoting diversity, and demonstrating a commitment to social responsibility – resulting in a more vibrant and equitable workplace. As a Black man, OTG has been instrumental in my career growth, offering unwavering support and responsiveness to my needs. Working collaboratively with a supportive team has allowed me to contribute freely and excel. If I can impart any insight for you, it would be to seek environments that prioritize inclusivity and teamwork!

Black History Month is a time for us to reflect on our past and acknowledge the work that is still to be done. It is important to celebrate Black History Month to honor and recognize the pioneers who have paved the way and opened up opportunities for future generations.

Server, Toronto Pearson International Airport
My biggest inspiration is the wonderful people around me who have come from all walks of life and make coming into work everyday something to look forward to. They have wisdom, energy and encourage me to become a better person every day. It inspires me to do my best in everything to work towards my goals. Overall, I feel blessed to be able to work with the people that surround me at my workplace. It’s important for OTG to celebrate Black History Month in order to reflect and look forward to the future of Black Canadians. Diversity in the workplace is also important to the company in order to come together and understand everyone – it really helps us to build a stronger community. OTG has supported my career by bringing in initiatives such as the Certified Trainers Programs in which I feel a great responsibility to train our newest servers that have recently started or transitioned into a new role. It is a great honour to be a mentor to new servers as they begin their journey. The advice I have for others is to never be afraid of growth and never stop learning.

Black History represents how my ancestors fought for us to matter in America while fighting through adversity. It means strength and resilience. My biggest inspiration is to be resilient and to learn from others. It's important for OTG to celebrate Black History Month because it shows unity in our workplace and allows others to value and show respect to all cultures. OTG supports me by helping its Crewmembers think about long term goals. They've helped steer me in the right direction to become the best I can be. Thank you OTG for caring and continuously instilling your core values upon your Crewmembers.
